VILLAS DE TRANCOSO is a luxury boutique hotel in the heart of Trancoso. Think luxury bungalow villas, a carefully landscaped garden with hammocks dotted around tropical plants, endless sun loungers and an amazing pool as the focal point of the resort: this is Villa de Trancoso. It would be remiss not to mention it’s own private beach, with endless deck chairs and coconuts on offer.
The bungalows are vast yet exude a sense of intimacy and home comforts, each decorated with eclectic, local and national art. The decor celebrates the vibrant colours of Brazil with the cool white walls of the villas and adding a touch of modernity to the aesthetic. We loved the little touches from the Villas de Trancoso provided sunscreen, to the daily replenished L’Occitanie en Provence amenities, to the little sweets that are offered on arrival.

The food at Villas de Trancoso was some of the best food we had in Trancoso. Breakfast consists of a large buffet, with an a la carte option also available. Endless fruits – most of them native to Brazil and unknown to Europeans – line the table, flanked by fresh juices and smoothies that change on a daily basis. A smorgasbord of meats, cheeses, cakes, pastries and pancakes line the table.
It is a buffet of cornucopian proportions. Yet if you need something cooked by way of sustenance, quirky interpretations of classics such as a deconstructed scrambled eggs with chorizo, are bound to tantalise you and sate even the hungriest of breakfast-goers.
We loved, too, the lunch offerings which, when taken by the relaxing pool area or next to the ocean, with a gentle samba music in the background and the soothing sound of the waves, is one of the most indulging experiences that Trancoso has to offer. Ours consisted of the classic hamburger and a decadent salad, topped with flakes of blue cheese and walnuts. The menu is relatively simple but the quality and standard is very, very high.
The small stretch of beachfront belongs to Villas de Trancoso. It is a charming spot that is arguably one of the nicest beaches in Trancoso. It is, however, the small but oh-so useful bar and the rows of beach loungers and parasols that steal the show here. The loungers look onto the horizon of the Atlantic Ocean, and the salty air combined with the soft Brazilian sun, induces pure relaxation in anyone fortunate enough to be here.
A small path leads along the coastline for the wanderers, to explore the varying seascape of rocks, rivers and cliffs that neighbour Trancoso…
